When February enters the calendar, we at the Field Station automatically think about properly disposing of used Christmas trees and focusing on the Great Backyard Bird Count!  Like clockwork, those events will happen February 12 and 19, respectively.  They are fun, educational, useful and open to "town and gown."

¾¨Ó㴫ý's Model United Nation Team Attends a Mock Meeting

Seven members of the ¾¨Ó㴫ý Model United Nations team recently attended a mock meeting at the College of Wooster.

"There were about 36 participants from ¾¨Ó㴫ý, the College of Wooster and Mercyhurst College," said Dr. Andrea Grove, assistant professor of political science and adviser to the group.  "The three advisers all attended the same graduate school, Ohio State University, and we have been making efforts to collaborate with their students in events like this."

The topic was a nuclear weapons free zone in the Middle East, and ¾¨Ó㴫ý students represented the people of Brazil, United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Iran, Ukraine, Indonesia and Austria.

"A model UN is a way for students to learn about the United Nations, contemporary international issues, multilateral diplomacy, how to see problems from various perspectives, and how to engage in role playing," Grove said.

¾¨Ó㴫ý Mathematics Professor at Joint Meeting

Dr. James Hall, professor of mathematics at ¾¨Ó㴫ý, recently presented a paper, "Differential Equations Enriched by Vector Space Concepts," at the joint meeting of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

"My paper suggests that recent reappearance of the integrated course in differential equations and linear algebra is an occasion for exploring how the two math specialties overlap and reinforce each other," Hall said. "In particular, the algebraic concepts of vector spaces are a framework into which to organize a variety of results from differential equations."

Hall, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 1984, earned his undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University, his master's from Harvard University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.  He is also a co-author of "Differential Equations and Linear Algebra" published by Prentice-Hall in 2002.
