¾¨Ó㴫ý Mathematics Professor Published

Dr. James Hall, professor of mathematics at ¾¨Ó㴫ý, recently had his article, "Tilings and Stamps," published in PHILAMATH, a journal of Mathematics Study Unit of the American Topical Association.

"The patterns in which postage stamps of various shapes are arranged in larger sheets and panes illustrate several features of plane tessellations or tilings," Hall said.  "For each example figures are provided showing the actual stamps together with a drawing of the underlying tiling pattern.  This meeting of math and stamp-collecting may offer an appealing connection to a general education student or members of a more general audience."

Hall, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 1984, earned his undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University, his master's from Harvard University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.  His professional interests include differential equations, teaching with computer technology, and the history of mathematics.  Hall was the 1989 Henderson lecturer at ¾¨Ó㴫ý with the presentation of "Tilings in Science and Art."

The Christmas gifts displayed in Orr Lobby were purchased by members of the College community for needy families and foster children in Lawrence County – an annual project coordinated by the Chapel staff led by Keturah Laney, chapel assistant.  Campus luminaries, which provide a lighted path to the event, were purchased by the Residence Life staff.

The evenings offering will go to support outreach programs supported by the Chapel Office. Ministries include Habitat for Humanity international home building projects, campus work trips, and various volunteer opportunities.
