The ¾¨Ó㴫ý Symphony Orchestra will present its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, in the Will W. Orr Auditorium on the College’s campus.
Under the direction of Dr. Melinda Crawford Perttu, professor of music, the orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, op. 84, as well as Smetana’s “Vlatava (The Moldau)” and “Blaník,” both from “Má Vlast.”
Two movements from Gwyneth Walker’s Language of the Soul for Trumpet and Strings, “The Soul Speaks of Peace” and “The Soul is a Free Spirit” will also be performed featuring trumpeter JaKobe Henry, current teaching fellow at ¾¨Ó㴫ý.
Recently named assistant professor of music, effective Jan. 1, 2025, Henry is currently pursuing his DMA in jazz performance at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he also earned his master’s degree in classical trumpet performance and literature. He received his undergraduate degree in music education from Jacksonville (Ala.) State University.
In addition to directing the ¾¨Ó㴫ý Symphony Orchestra, Crawford Perttu, who joined the faculty in 2011, also directs Ceòl na Teud, the College’s Scottish string ensemble. She earned an undergraduate degree in music education from Duquesne University and her master’s and Ph.D. in music education from Ohio State University.
The ¾¨Ó㴫ý Symphony Orchestra performs standard works for both full symphonic orchestra and string chamber orchestra with a range of repertoire from the Baroque Era through the present day.
The concert is free and open to the public.
