Nursing majors Faith Jones and Ashley DeCarbo were recently inducted into the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing National Honor Society.
Both students are rising seniors pursuing their bachelor’s degrees in nursing at ¾¨Ó㴫ý after graduating from the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing in April. Their induction into the honors society was based on their high GPAs, excellence in clinical performance and commitment to academic integrity and professionalism.
Last year, both students received the DAISY Award, which honors nurses, nursing students and nursing faculty who provide exceptional care to patients and their families. The award recognizes compassion, skills and leadership.
Jones of Volant, Pa., began her academic career as a biology major before changing her major to pursue her lifelong ambition of becoming a nurse. After graduation, she hopes to begin her career as an emergency room nurse while serving as a paramedic with the Volant Volunteer Fire Department. When she isn’t in the classroom or the hospital, Jones is on the field as a member of ¾¨Ó㴫ý’s softball team.
“The most valuable part of my nursing education has been understanding that I am capable of anything I put my mind to and that I was in the profession I needed to be in,” said Jones “The partnership with Jameson helped me grow as a person, especially when I did the student nurse internship program. Doing this program allowed me to be one step ahead of other students and gain skills in communicating with managers. I was able to get my first job because I was equipped with the skills I needed and was professionally prepared to apply and interview.”
As she explored potential majors, DeCarbo of New Castle, Pa., discovered a strong interest in anatomy and the medical field. Combined with her longstanding desire to help others, nursing became the natural path for her future career. DeCarbo credits Jameson with helping her grow both personally and professionally by challenging her with rigorous coursework and clinical experiences.
“The most valuable part of my education was learning that I am capable of hard things, and just because something seems difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible,” said DeCarbo“It was so rewarding to be inducted into the honors society. I spent so much time and energy studying every day during nursing school, so it was nice to see my hard work pay off and be recognized.”
DeCarbo plans to work in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. At ¾¨Ó㴫ý, she is a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, to which she serves as vice president of administration.
“My favorite part about being a Titan is the opportunities that I have been given. Whether that is within academics or athletics, I have met so many great people and have memories forever,” said Jones.
