Important Change to the Academic Calendar

Wednesday, June 3, 2020

Dear ¾¨Ó㴫ý Community:

Hopefully this finds each of you doing well.

We are writing to alert you to an important revision of the academic calendar for fall 2020 semester.  The purpose of this adjusted calendar is to prioritize the health and safety of our community by limiting the number of times the entire student body leaves and returns to campus.

Classes will begin Monday, August 17, and conclude with finals just before Thanksgiving.  There will be no fall midterm break. Fall semester classes will end Friday, Nov. 20, and final exams will take place Saturday, Nov. 21 through Wednesday, Nov. 25.

We know this announcement brings up many questions for you regarding move-in, orientation, trainings and sports seasons, marching band and more.  The College’s leadership team is actively crafting those details, policies, and changes and will communicate as quickly as we can through email, social media and the forthcoming plan for reopening webpage.

To achieve the aims of in-person instruction and the health and safety of our community, we will all be living and learning with new physical distancing and hygiene guidelines.  Together, we can create a campus environment that prioritizes health and safety while still allowing a great residential semester.

We look forward to seeing you face-to-face on August 17 and strongly urge you to remain connected to your email throughout the remainder of the summer.

Class of 2020 – You are still very much on our minds and in our planning.  As we consider reopening, we are also considering plans to safely gather for your commencement in was that comply with current guidelines.  Thank you for your patience.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Coker, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Enrollment and Gina Vance, Vice President of Student Affairs

¾¨Ó㴫ý to resume in-person classes this fall

Thursday, May 28, 2020

¾¨Ó㴫ý plans to resume in-person instruction and residence life for the fall 2020 semester while seeking to protect the health and safety of its students, employees and visitors amid the coronavirus pandemic.

With Lawrence County entering the green phase—the least-restrictive phase of Pennsylvania’s reopening plan—on Friday, May 29, College administrators, faculty and staff are developing policies and practices necessary to ensure a safe return to campus while continuing the College’s 168 years of academic excellence and robust campus life experience.

“We are committed to bringing our students back to campus this fall, with great care. To achieve that, we are developing plans to comply with federal and state health and safety guidelines,” said ¾¨Ó㴫ý President Dr. Kathy Brittain Richardson.

To mitigate the spread of the virus, the College is currently examining curriculum adjustments and safety protocols that need to be made to academic instruction, residence life, dining services, athletics, campus activities and arts and culture events.

“We plan to share more specific details in the coming weeks, but we wanted to communicate our commitment to reopening our campus and welcoming students this fall,” Richardson said. “We will do our utmost to provide students with the richly engaging, collaborative experiences that have been the hallmark of a ¾¨Ó㴫ý education since 1852.”

The College shifted exclusively to online instruction on March 19. The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) announced the cancellation of all spring sports on April 3. Competition this fall will be determined by PAC guidelines.

Anticipating that some students and their families might face financial uncertainty caused by the pandemic, ¾¨Ó㴫ý launched a special fundraising effort—Bring Back the Titans—to help students return to ¾¨Ó㴫ý in the fall. To date, over $1,450,000 has been raised, thanks in large part to matching donations from the May Emma Hoyt Foundation.
