The national service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega invites the ¾¨Ó㴫ý community to extend its appreciation to new recruits, veterans, first responders, wounded warriors, caregivers and individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas in tandem with an organization called Operation Gratitude. During the lunch hours on March 1 and 2, Alpha Phi Omega will host a thank-you card drive in Berlin Lounge. Supplies will be provided.

Even though ¾¨Ó㴫ý is tucked in small, rural New Wilmington, PA, graduates leave with a sense of worldliness after study abroad experiences or classes that challenge them to think on a global scale. Alumna Lisa Raidel Devlin '02 is one of the many faces to leave ¾¨Ó㴫ý with that feeling.

Music professor and concert pianist Dr. Nancy DeSalvo produced a solo CD with recorded works by faculty composers Dr. Daniel Perttu and Dr. Jason Howard. The process required years of practicing the composers’ sonatas before the recording date and multiple stages of editing. However, after working on the CD for over three years, DeSalvo finally released it on Feb. 9.

WQED-TV’s “Filmmakers Corner” will feature a documentary by senior broadcast and digital communications major Emiley Westfall ’18 on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 10 p.m. The documentary "Tutu, Pink Shoes, & Baby Blues" tells the story about international adoption based on one local family's experience. The Pittsburgh PBS station program showcases short digital projects by local filmmakers.

“When I got news that my film would be aired, I was ecstatic,” said Westfall. “I've never had anything of mine aired on television other than the WCN 24/7 news that I produce.”

“Tutu, Pink Shoes, and Baby Blues” is a documentary about the Michelson family and their choice to adopt twins from Africa. The mother, Holly Michelson, is the main focus of the film. Westfall captures Michelson’s life as a mother and wife through the adoption process, which she describes as a “call of God.”

The documentary chronicles the Michelson’s transition from a family of three to a family of five through the adoption of twins. As the story unfolds, the Michelsons learn of an opportunity to adopt a second set of twins and begin the process of becoming a family of seven.

Westfall created the film for ¾¨Ó㴫ý’s documentary production course. The course spans two semesters, moving students from the research and concept launches of their documentaries into production and post-production. “Tutu, Pink Shoes, and Baby Blues” premiered in Mueller Theater during the Student Documentary Showcase in November 2017.

“The experience of making this documentary has prepared me to always keep working hard and keep pushing forward,” said Westfall. “You never know where life may take you, but if you put your mind to it, anything can happen. I made this documentary not thinking this would even happen, but in the end my hard work and dedication on this film landed me in a position where it will be aired on television.”

Assistant professor and chair of the neuroscience program Dr. Deanne Buffalari recently published a book chapter in an edited volume entitled The Neuroscience of Cocaine: Mechanisms and Treatment. Her chapter, "Nicotine and cocaine interactions: focus on dopamine pharmacology, neuroadaptations, and behavior relevant to addiction," focuses on how nicotine and cocaine might interact at the cellular and behavioral level to promote drug use, escalation to addiction and the risk of relapse.

With less than a $100 budget to make a high-end music video, two ¾¨Ó㴫ý students and a recent graduate won 1^st place in the Music Video Category at the Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) Festival of Media Arts.

Four ¾¨Ó㴫ý senior art students are presenting select work from their portfolios beginning Feb. 13 and lasting through March 24 in Patterson Hall's Foster Art Gallery. An open reception will be held Feb. 20 from 4:30 - 6 p.m. At the reception, each artist will speak about their work and open the floor for additional questions.
