Two members of the recently formed ¾¨Ó㴫ý Speech & Debate Society competed in the Novice National Forensics Tournament, March 9-11 at Suffolk University in Boston. Sophomore English Julie Yesko and senior communication studies major Christian Na represented ¾¨Ó㴫ý in a field of 25 colleges and universities from across the country.

Last month, a group of ¾¨Ó㴫ý Band students performed in the 71st Annual Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Honors Band at Mansfield University under one of the top composers in the country Professor Mark Camphouse. The Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Honors Band is the longest continuing honors band of its type in the entire country, and this year's band represented 25 colleges and universities throughout the commonwealth.

Sophomore child and family studies majors Alyssa Peters and Samantha Dubetz attended the Midwestern Early Childhood Council’s early childhood conference on Feb. 23 at Grove City College to further their understandings of their prospective field.

Eight-time All-American swimmer and secondary school administrator Dr. Shauna Braun Zukowski '92 will return to ¾¨Ó㴫ý as the guest speaker for the 31st annual Wayne H. Christy Memorial Lecture. On Sunday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Wallace Memorial Chapel, Zukowski will speak on her experiences as an educator, administrator, wife, mother and survivor of a ruptured brain aneurysm.

¾¨Ó㴫ý is hosting the first annual "Woodwind Day" on March 17 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and perform with top level professional woodwind pedagogues and performers. There is no registration fee, and lunch is provided. Colleges Against Cancer at ¾¨Ó㴫ý is gearing up for their annual Relay for Life event. The Relay takes place April 7 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Burry Stadium (rain location is the Marge Walker Center/Old 77). At 10:40 a.m., there will be a "Survivor's Ceremony" to celebrate those who have fought the battle against cancer and won. The opening ceremony and "Survivor's Lap" (a lap specifically for survivors) will follow.

Waterloo, Iowa is a long way from the quaint, homey town of New Wilmington— approximately 11ish hours matter of fact. For alumna Hannah Miller ’13 (Paczkowski), going to college outside of Iowa was very important to her. She didn’t quite know at the moment just how far her collegiate pursuits would take her from home. However, all it took was one college visit to assure her ¾¨Ó㴫ý was where she was meant to be.

Participating in the annual African American Read-In at Farrell Elementary is a staple during Black History Month for students at ¾¨Ó㴫ý. Every year, a group of early childhood education majors and Black Student Union members head to Farrell Elementary to read books written by African American authors to groups of young scholars. Other readers in attendance included ¾¨Ó㴫ý’s vice president for student affairs Carllos Lassiter; superintendent of Farrell area school district Dr. Lora Adams-King; and Mercer county district judge Mary A. Odem amongst other prominent local community members.

Senior criminal justice major Max Ungerman '18 recieved a travel grant from the Drinko Center to attend the Academy of Criminal Justice conference in New Orleans. Under the mentorship of Dr. Kristenne Robison, Max presented his reaserch entitled "Discovering the Learning Perspective of the Incarcerated Female Student: A Qualitative Diary Study," which analyzed the experiences of incarcerated women.
