Dr. Patrick C. McCarthy, professor of biology at ¾¨Ó㴫ý, recently attended the 2001 Biotechnology Conference at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
The annual conference, which advertised itself as Updating Educators for the 21st Century' featured nationally known speakers such as Bruce Alberts, president of the National Academy of Sciences, in the areas of molecular biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology.
"I attended workshops on protein crystal growth, computational gene analysis, DNA sequencing, and protein fingerprinting," said McCarthy. " I incorporated the information and procedures I gained from this conference into several courses in our molecular biology major.
"¾¨Ó㴫ý has been a pioneer in undergraduate education in molecular biology," continued McCarthy. "It was one of six molecular biology programs offered when the major was founded in 1985."
McCarthy, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 1970, earned his undergraduate degree, master's, and Ph.D. from Wayne State University.
