Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new $13 million Campus Center at ¾¨Ó㴫ý is scheduled Friday, May 18, at 11:30 a.m.
"The campus landscape is changing," said Len Carroll, chair of the Board of Trustees. "Some of us are getting pretty good at tossing dirt with shovels as we've had a number of recent groundbreaking ceremonies. The Remick Admissions House, the Mansell Education Wing of the Field House, The Edwards Wing of the Field House, the new track, The Marge Walker Recreation Center, the renovated Thompson-Clark Hall, and now the Campus Center."
The Campus Center will be anchored on the east and west by two existing buildings - Walton-Mayne Student Union and Freeman Hall. The multilevel facility will bridge and front the renovated buildings - tying the facilities and their programs together.
The state-of-the-art facility will feature:
· An interdisciplinary Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning that will advance world-class teaching at ¾¨Ó㴫ý and enrich K-12 education through outreach programs;
· An instructional technology studio (with computer, multimedia, and distance learning capabilities) will provide faculty with training opportunities and foster new collaborative and interdisciplinary programs;
· Campus radio, television stations and broadcast facilities;
· Large multipurpose rooms, a lecture hall, and other facilities for community use;
· Attractive social and recreational facilities (food court, after-hours club, game room);
· Centralized student services (Career Center, Office of Community Service, Offices of Student Affairs and Safety & Security, duplicating center, Bookstore).
"The Campus Center, much like a home family room, will be the heart of the College," said ¾¨Ó㴫ý President R. Thomas Williamson. "Its activities and functions will reflect our heritage, and our priorities for the future. It's where we welcome - and help - old neighbors and new friends. And it's a place where a great deal of living, learning, and growing will go on."
In addition to Carroll and Willimason, architect Thomas Celli and Danyelle Muscarella, student trustee and former Student Government president, will take part in the official ground breaking ceremony.
The ceremony is open to the entire campus community, as well as the public. For more information, contact Gloria Cagagis, vice president for institutional advancement, at (724) 946-7368.
