¾¨Ó㴫ý will present the gospel musical, "Your Arms Too Short to Box with God," Thursday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. in Orr Auditiorium.
The play, which features Grammy winner Cissy Houston, revolves around the Biblical story of Jesus from the book of Matthew. Musical numbers include "There's a Stranger in Town," "Be Careful Who You Kiss," "See How They Done My Lord," and "Where Were You When They Cruicified My Lord."
Cissy Houston, mother of pop singer Whitney Houston, began her career in a family gospel group, the Drinkard Singers, which also featured her nieces, Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick. The trio was later employed as back-up singers for Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Her career continued as lead singer with the "Sweet Inspirations" and then as a solo performer with hits such as "I'll Be There," "Think It Over," and "Be My Baby."
More recently, Houston's new book How Sweet the Sound: My Life with God and Gsopel, recalls the role God and gospel played in her family's life. In 1997, she won a Grammy award for her gospel album, Face to Face.
The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the ¾¨Ó㴫ý Office of Diversity Services and Powers Trust. For more information, contact the Office of Diversity Services at (724) 946-6178.
