¾¨Ó㴫ý Political Science Professor to Edit Professional Journal

Posted on Monday, December 9, 2002

Dr. Andrea Grove, assistant professor of political science at ¾¨Ó㴫ý, has been chosen editor of the International Society of Political Psychology News.

"I'm excited to be editor of this newsletter," said Grove. "I've been very active in this organization, and have served in a number of other roles."

The International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP) seeks to advance the quality of scholarship in political psychology and to increase the usefulness of work in political psychology.

Grove recently had two articles published in professional journals. "The Intra-National Struggle to Define'Us': External Intervention as a Two-Way Street," focuses on ancient hatreds, leaders, and on the context that leaders find themselves in.

"Leaders have the power to mobilize people to fight or not to fight, and leaders are driven by circumstantial opportunities or the primordial desires of the masses to resist peace or coexist," said Grove. "This paper asserts that leaders compete to frame identity and mission, and explores the degree to which international factors affect whose definitions of the situation' are successful in precipitating mobilization shifts among potential followers."

Grove second article is "Theory, Perception, and Leadership Agency: A Multiple Processing Model of Nationalist Mobilization."

"Multiple processes are at work as nationalist groups mobilize, but few researchers consider how the processes impinge on leaders despite the amount of attention paid to leadership by policymakers," explained Grove. "This article focuses on leaders' framing and manipulation of structural and situational factors often treated individually in extant work. Emphasis is on the conditions under which different explanations inform leaders' own definitions of the situation as they compete to persuade their audiences toward more inclusive or exclusive ends."

Research conducted by Grove and Donald A. Sylvan has been presented at conferences in both New Orleans and Budapest. The research concerns the "Problem Representation and Conflict Dynamics in Northern Ireland and the Middle East: Domestic Political Processes with International Impact."

Grove, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 2000, earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, her master's from Lancaster University, and her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
