Posted on Monday, March 31, 2003

¾¨Ó㴫ý will host a live demonstration of birds of prey and a lecture from Jennifer Brackbill, assistant program director at the Raptor Center division of the Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, Thursday, April 3, at 6:30 p.m. in Phillips Lecture Hall of the Hoyt Science Resources Center.

The lecture/demonstration will feature live birds of prey such as eagles, owls, hawks and falcons, and discuss their adaptations for flight and predation.

Brackbill, 1996 ¾¨Ó㴫ý graduate in environmental science, helps with the animal menagerie, traveling road shows, internships, volunteers, work-study students, the Honorary Animal Caretaker Program, Northern Saw-Whet Owl banding, and Elderhostels.

Shaver's Creek Environmental Center is a Pennsylvania State Outreach Resource located near State College, and is one of only a few facilities in Pennsylvania licensed to conduct educational programs with permanently injured (non-releasable) birds of prey.

The main goals of the Raptor Center include the conservation of these majestic birds through educational programs that promote the understanding and well-being of native raptors, as well as training students about the care and handling of raptors.

The event is free and open to the public.  Fro more information, contact Dr. Ann Throckmorton, professor and chair of biology, at (724) 946-7209 or e-mail athrock@westminster.edu.
