Faculty Forum Begins with Television Commercials

Posted on Friday, January 19, 2007

Bradley Weaver, ¾¨Ó㴫ý instructor of broadcast communications, will discuss the "The Story Behind a TV Commercial: How Theory Became Reality in BC410" at Faculty Forum Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center.

"I'm planning a presentation of how Dr. [David] Barner [associate professor of broadcast communications] and I team taught commercial production," Weaver said. "We worked with students on everything from theories, concepts, and skills to working with a client, brainstorming, writing, planning, to the creation of television spots.

"I will show some of the spots and talk about how ideas grew. I will also discuss the process of requiring students to run a project through focus groups, so they could experience audience research as well as the production aspect of making commercials. The goal was to help the students make better commercials and in the process become media savvy and recognize what makes good advertising and what is mediocre."

Weaver, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 2000, earned his undergraduate degree from Alderson-Broaddus College and master's from the University of Kansas.

Faculty Forum, established in 1990, serves as a venue for the exchange of ideas and information among ¾¨Ó㴫ý faculty. Speakers present their research, teaching ideas, lectures, performances, special programs, and uses of technology to keep faculty informed about the work of colleagues from many disciplines.

The event is free and open to the public. Contact Weaver at (724) 946-7238 or e-mail weaverbl@westminster.edu for more information.
