Internationally acclaimed organist and recording artist Christa Rakich will perform a concert free and open to the public Friday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.
"She has selected works by Buxtehude, J.S. Bach, Mendelssohn, Johanna Sefter, and James Woodman," said Kathryn Miller, college organist. "While at ¾¨Ó㴫ý, she will also conduct a master class open to ¾¨Ó㴫ý faculty, students and the public Thursday, Feb. 1, from 2-3 p.m. in Orr."
As a Fulbright Scholar, Rakich studied for two years with Anton Heiller at the Hochschule fqr Musik in Vienna, Austria. She earned her undergraduate degrees in organ and German from Oberlin College with Phi Beta Kappa honors. Rakich received her master's degree with honors from the New England Conservatory and taught there for several years. She has also served on the faculties of the ¾¨Ó㴫ý Choir College and the University of Connecticut, as assistant organist at Harvard University, and as artist-in-residence at the University of Pennsylvania.
"A prizewinner at international organ competitions, most notably Bruges in 1976, Rakich has received particular acclaim for her interpretations of the music of J.S. Bach," Miller said. "You won't want to miss what I am sure will be a wonderful evening of music."
The event is supported in part by the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance and the Youngstown Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
