A ¾¨Ó㴫ý student will perform her capstone organ recital Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Will W. Orr Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Shelley Culver a daughter of Rickey and Susan Culver, Frewsburg, New York. She is a senior sacred music and music education major and a graduate of Frewsburg Central School. While at ¾¨Ó㴫ý, she studied the organ, piano, and oboe. She is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, the Music Intern Teaching Program, and the ¾¨Ó㴫ý Women's Chorus. She has been on the Dean's List for nine consecutive semesters and is a member of Pi Sigma Pi, an academic honor society. Past performances at ¾¨Ó㴫ý included: the annual Halloween organ recitals, accompanying the Women's Chorus, and accompanying for many ¾¨Ó㴫ý guest artists on the organ.
Culver has performed at many locations outside of ¾¨Ó㴫ý, including St. Paul's Cathedral with Dr. Hans Davidsson from the Eastman School of Music. She performed works by Scheidt, Scheidemann, and Böhm at a joint recital on the historic 1686/87 Schnitger Organ in Norden, Germany. She gave her junior recital at the First United Methodist Church in Sharon where she is a past director of the children's choir and serves as substitute organist and choir director.
Her program includes: "Praluduim in A minor, Bux WV 153" by Dietrich Buxtehude; "Trio Sonata No. 4 in E minor, BWV 528" by Johann Sebastian Bach;"A Mighty Fortress is Our God" by Martin Luther; "Symphonie pour orgue, Op. 13, No. 4" by Charles-Marie Widor; "Cantabile" by César Franck; and "La Nativite du Seigneur" by Olivier Messiaen.
The program also includes soprano Melissa Barnes, a music education major from Saline, Michigan, singing "Kleine Orgelmesse Benedictus" by Joseph Haydn with Culver on the organ.
