Dr. Carolyn Cuff, professor of mathematics and chair of ¾¨Ó㴫ý's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, was one of the invited speakers for the annual fall workshop for new faculty in the mathematical sciences.
The event, held Sept. 15 at the University of Pittsburgh, was sponsored by the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Mathematical Association of America. This annual workshop addressed a broad range of professional issues, focusing on the teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics.
Cuff demonstrated Fathom-a software program used to help explain several topics from statistics, including correlation.
Cuff has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 1989. She earned her undergraduate degree at ¾¨Ó㴫ý and her master's and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Barbara Faires, ¾¨Ó㴫ý professor of mathematics, organized the workshop. She is one of the coordinators of the Section NExT Program, which hosts two workshops each year for faculty in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia who are beginning teaching careers in the mathematical sciences.
Faires has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 1971. She earned her undergraduate degree at East Carolina University, a master's at the University of South Carolina, and Ph.D. at Kent State University.
Dr. Natacha Fontes-Merz, ¾¨Ó㴫ý assistant professor of mathematics, participated in the workshop. She is the coordinator of the student program for the Allegheny Mountain Section and is a National Project NExT participant.
Fontes-Merz, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 2004, earned her undergraduate degree at Oberlin College and a master's and Ph.D. at Kent State University.
