Religion Professor Publishes Fifth Book

Posted on Thursday, April 17, 2008

Dr. Bryan Rennie, ¾¨Ó㴫ý associate professor and chair of the Department of Religion, History, Philosophy and Classics, is co-editor of Religion, Terror and Violence: Religious Studies Perspectives, recently published by Routledge.

In light of the continued shadow cast by 9/11 and the subsequent war on terror, this volume brings together a group of distinguished scholars to scrutinize the link between religion and violence. A key theme in this collection is that both the violence and the reactions to those events were linked to cultural and social authorizing processes that could be called "religious."

"[Co-editor] Philip Tite and I have been working on this collection of essays since 2004," Rennie said. "I was the organizer of and participant in a session at the international congress of the International Association for the History of Religions in Tokyo in 2005, at which a number of the participants in this volume presented and discussed their work."

"All of the work we have done has been tremendously informative and enriched my ability to teach in the classroom," Rennie added. "In particular, Maureen Korp's contribution on art and artists post-9/11 contributed significantly to my Religion and the Arts course."

Rennie, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 1994, holds the Vira I. Heinz Chair in Religion. He earned undergraduate and master's degrees and Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is the author or editor of four books on Mircea Eliade.
