Mathematics Professor Keynote Speaker at Colloquium

Posted on Friday, April 18, 2008

Dr. Pamela Richardson, ¾¨Ó㴫ý assistant professor of mathematics, was the keynote speaker at a colloquium hosted by the Mathematics and Computer Science Department April 15.

Richardson's talk, "A Journey into Jordan Theory," focused on a survey of the life and times of Jordan algebras and the colorful characters who have influenced their development over the years. Jordan theory is a thriving branch of nonassociative algebra that arose from the realm of quantum mechanics.

Richardson teaches discrete mathematics, abstract algebra, and topology. Her research interests are in nonassociative algebra, particularly Jordan algebras and superalgebras. She is a puzzle enthusiast with an interest in game theory and involving students in undergraduate research. Richardson is an active member of the Mathematical Association of America and is a Project NExT Fellow.

Richardson, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 2006, earned an undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
