¾¨Ó㴫ý will host a "Song Cycles of Contemporary American Composers" concert with guest musicians Shawn Roy, bass-baritone, and Dr. Chan Kiat Lim, pianist, Friday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.
A feature of the performance will be the world premiere of "Mont Blanc," composed by Dr. Daniel Perttu, ¾¨Ó㴫ý assistant professor of music, and based on the poem by Percy Shelley.
Perttu, who joined the ¾¨Ó㴫ý faculty in August, is the music theory program coordinator. He earned an undergraduate degree from Williams College, two master's from Kent State University, and doctorate from Ohio State University. His compositions have been performed in 19 states and China, and he was recently commissioned by the Johnstone Fund for New Music at the Columbus Foundation to compose for the Johnstone Woodwind Master Series at Ohio State University.
In addition to the concert, Roy and Lim will present Master Classes on voice and piano Thursday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. in Patterson Hall.
Roy is a member of the voice faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He has performed in musical theatre and with opera companies that include New York City, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Sarasota, Omaha, Tulsa, and Fort Worth, as well as the West Norwegian Opera in Bergen, Norway. He has toured throughout France, Spain, Belgium, and Switzerland, and has performed with the National Symphony of Bolivia.
Kim is on the piano faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He has won several piano competitions, including the Young Artist Concerto Competition. He was recently the convention artist at the WVMTA state convention, where he performed Bartók's Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra with the West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra. He has performed solo recitals in Italy, Romania, and throughout the United States, including the Music at Penn Alps concert series in Maryland and at Steinway Hall in New York City.
