Dr. Marosh Furimsky, ¾¨Ó㴫ý assistant professor of biology, and Michael Romeo, a ¾¨Ó㴫ý senior biology major, presented a poster of their year-long research, "Teratogenic Effects of Ethylene Glycol and 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole on Zebrafish Central Nervous System Development," at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) conference Jan. 3-7 in Boston.
"We used zebrafish in a lab setting to model the impacts of pollutants on native fish in natural aquatic systems," Furimsky said. "This project bridged the fields of developmental neurobiology and aquatic toxicology and can be directly applied to current environmental issues."
"The annual meeting of the SICB is one of the biggest in the field and the poster was very well received," he added.
Furimsky, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 2006, earned an undergraduate degree and Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa.
Romeo is a son of David and Devina Romeo of Bessemer and a graduate of Mohawk Area High School.
