English Major Wins Hanley Speech Scholarship

Kelly Lake, a ¾¨Ó㴫ý sophomore English major, was awarded the John C. Hanley Speech Scholarship.

Lake is a daughter of Walter and Catherine Lake of Boardman, Ohio, and a graduate of Boardman High School.

Lake's winning speech, "What Would Jesus Watch?," considered Jesus' possible reaction to contemporary movies.

The $1,300 scholarship is awarded annually to a sophomore for the delivery of the best speech relating the Christian faith to contemporary culture. Written submissions were considered by a panel of judges, who selected the four most promising to be presented April 30. The oral presentations were judged for delivery, organization, and content.

Additional speeches were presented by:

Adam Griffith, a sophomore history and Latin major, is a son of Linda Miller of Warren, Ohio, and Griffith Griffith of Cortland, Ohio. He is a graduate of Howland High School.

Alyssa Hanna, a sophomore broadcast communications major, is a daughter of Susan Hanna of Allison Park and Mark Hanna of Wexford. She is a graduate of Shaler Area High School.

Kristen Pungitore, a sophomore communication studies and religion major, is a daughter of Donald and Deborah Pungitore of Elizabeth and a graduate of Elizabeth Forward High School.

Judges for the competition were Dr. Beverly Cushman, ¾¨Ó㴫ý assistant professor of religion and Christian education, and Dr. Bryan Rennie, Vira I. Heinz professor of religion and chair of ¾¨Ó㴫ý's Department of Religion, History, Philosophy and Classics.
