Communication Studies Instructor to Speak at Faculty Forum

Posted on Thursday, October 22, 2009

Keith Corso, ¾¨Ó㴫ý instructor of communication studies, will present "Extreme Makeover: PowerPoint Edition" at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.

"The inspiration for this came from my 'Introduction to Public Communication' class," Corso said. "Students in that class were required to use visual aids in their speeches. Time after time, they were using wordy slides with bullet points, which really isn't a visual aid. I designed an assignment that focused on students demonstrating a process with PowerPoint slides using images only. I wanted the students to get the 'visual' part of an aid and to break them of the habit of using word-filled bullet point slides."

"After having read the research on multimedia learning, I'm now able to give solid reasons why we should 'makeover' our presentations," Corso explained.

Corso, a 1984 ¾¨Ó㴫ý graduate who joined the ¾¨Ó㴫ý faculty in 2004, earned a master's from the University of Akron.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, ¾¨Ó㴫ý professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.
