Dr. Sarah Kennedy, ¾¨Ó㴫ý assistant professor of chemistry, received the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh's (SSP) College Equipment Grant during a May 19 awards ceremony.
The award, given to small colleges and universities within the SSP's active member region, is intended to enhance college equipment related to the study of spectroscopy. ¾¨Ó㴫ý's grant will be used to purchase new spectrometers that integrate with the LabQuest hand-held data collection devices used in many laboratory courses.
"These new spectrometers will allow students to visualize their data in real-time, allowing them to analyze their results immediately and design follow-up experiments," Kennedy said. "Not only will these be useful in the general chemistry, biochemistry, and analytical laboratories, but they will also be used for field experiences. Using the new spectrometers, pH and temperature probes with the LabQuests, students will be able to conduct on-site analysis of water samples. The chemistry faculty are looking forward to incorporating them into our laboratory curriculum."
Kennedy, a ¾¨Ó㴫ý graduate who joined the faculty in 2009, earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
