First Book-¾¨Ó㴫ý will host over 250 elementary school students for dinner and a performance of Strega Nona the Musical Tuesday, Oct. 19.
Beth Brooks of ¾¨Ó㴫ý's Student Affairs Office will read Tomie DePaola's Strega Nona at the dinner and children will have an opportunity to meet one of their favorite characters before the show.
Members of First Book-¾¨Ó㴫ý will assist at the dinner, serve as ushers, and distribute copies of the book at the musical.
The event is a collaboration spearheaded by First Book-¾¨Ó㴫ý that includes the New Wilmington Rotary Club and ¾¨Ó㴫ý's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Celebrity Series, and Sodexo Dining Services. A grant from the Caroline Knox Memorial Trust Fund will provide transportation and the meal and books that will be distributed.
First Book-¾¨Ó㴫ý is the local affiliate of a non-profit organization that distributes new books at no cost to needy children. In the past year, the local group has donated 1,000 books to schools and after-school programs in Lawrence and Mercer counties. Advisers are Dr. Eileen Morelli, ¾¨Ó㴫ý associate professor of education, and Dr. Mandy Medvin, professor and chair of ¾¨Ó㴫ý's Department of Psychology.
