¾¨Ó㴫ý has received a 2011 Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grant to purchase a fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) instrument to be used in undergraduate research and teaching.

¾¨Ó㴫ý's proposal for the matching grant was submitted by Dr. Sarah Kennedy, assistant professor of chemistry, and was one of 12 selected from nearly 60 submissions.  The grant was awarded by the Pittsburgh Conference and sponsored by the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh and the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh.

"This instrument can be utilized in a variety of biology and chemistry classes, such as advanced chemistry laboratory, biochemistry, and cell and molecular biology," Kennedy said.  "Biochemistry major Katie Farley and I will likely be the first users, as we purify our newly-cloned protein.  The FPLC makes protein purification and protein interaction assays more efficient and effective."

Farley, a sophomore, is a daughter of Robert Farley, Bangor, and Stephanie Farley, Belvidere, N.J.  She is a graduate of Bangor Area High School.

Kennedy, a ¾¨Ó㴫ý graduate who joined the faculty in 2009, earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Contact Kennedy at (724) 946-7294 or e-mail kennedsa@westminster.edu for additional information.
