¾¨Ó㴫ý

Seven ¾¨Ó㴫ý students and their adviser attended the annual MidSouth Philosophy Conference at the University of Memphis (Tenn.) March 4-6.

Michael Gorman, a ¾¨Ó㴫ý senior philosophy and economics major, presented "Towards a Philosophy of Experience: Kant's Contribution to the Development of the Foucauldian Limit-Experience" at the undergraduate conference.  The paper is part of the genealogical development section of Gorman's Honors project and draws on Foucault's The Order of Things: An Archaeology of Human Knowledge, Kant's A Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics, and Marc Djaballah's dissertation Kant, Foucault, and Forms of Experience.

"The experience was very positive, as my paper was well received by both the undergraduates and the professors who attended my presentation," Gorman said.  "I was also able to attend a presentation that was pertinent to my interests in post-undergraduate philosophical studies."

Gorman's participation at the conference was supported by a travel/presentation grant from ¾¨Ó㴫ý's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and a Phi Sigma Tau Alumni Award.

Additional ¾¨Ó㴫ý students attending were John Allison, Sarah Avery, Robert Coulter, Adam Griffith, Jaclyn Miller, and Kevin Winner.  They were accompanied by Dr. David Goldberg, ¾¨Ó㴫ý associate professor of philosophy.

Also attending and joining the group were Christie Grewe Nelson and Ben Nelson, 2006 ¾¨Ó㴫ý graduates, and Anthony Colwell, a 2008 ¾¨Ó㴫ý graduate.

The Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was created to enrich undergraduate education at ¾¨Ó㴫ý through advancing world-class teaching as well as by participating in collaborations that address community and regional needs including strengthening K-12 education.  The Undergraduate Research Initiative provides funding for students to conduct research and to present their research at regional and national conferences.  Visit for more information about the Drinko Center and its programs.
