Five ¾¨Ó㴫ý music students participated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) vocal competition Nov. 5 at Youngstown (Ohio) State University.
Communication studies and music major Hannah Timm earned first place in the Upper Division Musical Theater Women and third place in the Junior Women Classical Division. She is from the studio of William Ambert, ¾¨Ó㴫ý adjunct music faculty.
Timm is a daughter of Robert and Sheri Timm of St. Marys and a graduate of St. Marys High School.
Also competing from ¾¨Ó㴫ý were:
• Music education and music performance major Kathleen Bachtel, a daughter of Michael and Jennifer Bachtel of Massillon, Ohio, and a graduate of Washington High School, competed in the Sophomore Women Classical Division;
• Music education major Christian Heasley, a son of Daniel and Lisa Heasley of New Castle and a graduate of Laurel High School, competed in the Junior Men Division;
• Music education and music performance major Elise Heater, a daughter of Ronald and Kathleen Heater of Creswell, Ore., and a graduate of Creswell High School, competed in the Sophomore Women Classical Division;
• Music performance major Anne Rematt, a daughter of Denise Rematt of Northern Cambria and a graduate of Northern Cambria High School, competed in the Junior Women Classical Division.
¾¨Ó㴫ý adjunct music faculty Marie Libal-Smith provided accompaniment.
Dr. Anne Hagan Bentz, ¾¨Ó㴫ý associate professor of music and past president of the Tri-State Chapter of NATS, served as a judge.
Approximately 70 vocalists from colleges and universities in the Pennsylvania-Ohio-West Virginia region participated in two rounds of competition, followed by an awards ceremony to honor the best singers in each category.
"Students benefit from the written feedback from the judges and from seeing how they compare with students at other colleges," Bentz said.
