¾¨Ó㴫ý's Language in Motion program will host 113 high school students from Wilmington Area School District and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School for the sixth annual Foreign Language Intercultural Day Friday, April 13.
This year's focus is on the legacies from French, Roman, and Spanish cultures in our own culture. Latin, Spanish, and French students will participate in a full day of activities led by ¾¨Ó㴫ý students.Â
Workshops and other activities will give students the opportunity to focus on these legacies through art, architecture, fashion, dance, music, bull fighting, fencing, sword fighting, and other important cultural events. In addition, students will read and analyze poems in the foreign languages they have been studying.
Milagros Swerdlow, ¾¨Ó㴫ý Spanish lecturer and Language in Motion coordinator, has selected eight ¾¨Ó㴫ý students to make presentations and guide activities throughout the day: John Allison, Addison Domske, Kearsie Dougherty, Chelsea Gallo, Chrissy Moudry, Quimber-Kay Nutter, Hannah Timm¸ and Marlee Tonks.
The school district's language teachers, including Adam Griffith, a 2011 ¾¨Ó㴫ý graduate who teaches Latin at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, will provide assistance and expertise, along with Dr. Dwight Castro, ¾¨Ó㴫ý professor of classics.
Language in Motion is an innovative outreach program that gives study-abroad returnees, international students, and upper-level language students the opportunity to create language and cultural activities for presentation in K-12 language, social studies, and other classes where culture can be studied.
¾¨Ó㴫ý's Language in Motion program is sponsored by ¾¨Ó㴫ý's Department of Modern Languages, Drinko Center for Experiential Learning, and the Heritage Chair of Humanities.
