¾¨Ó㴫ý Environmental Symposium Announces Award Winners

¾¨Ó㴫ý students won numerous awards in December at the Student Symposium on the Environment.  The event was hosted by ¾¨Ó㴫ý Environmental Programs and co-sponsored by the Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition.  Awards were sponsored by Stream Restoration, Inc.

Oral and poster presentations were given by students from ¾¨Ó㴫ý, Slippery Rock University, Geneva College, Robert Morris University, and Youngstown State University.

Among the award winners were ¾¨Ó㴫ý students Cody R. Michaels, presenting "A Summer in Someone Else's Trash: Recycling Technician Internship;" David Starr, presenting "Effects of Butylated Hydroxytoluene;" and Mara Sawdy, presenting "Hydraulic Fracturing: The Potential Risks to Air Quality and Future Research Directions for the ALLARM Program."

¾¨Ó㴫ý students mentioned as honorable mention recipients were Adam Montowski and Adam Cheatham, presenting their "Analysis of Recycled Batteries and ¾¨Ó㴫ý's Recycling Program;" Acacia Ferrese, presenting her "Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity of Silk Dyed with Staghorn Sumac Extract;" and Lance Jubic, presenting "Closterium Moniliferum: A Candidate for the Remediation of Water Contaminate by Hydraulic Fracturing."

Cody Michaels, a senior environmental science major, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas and Christine Michaels and a graduate of Shenango High School.

David Starr, a senior molecular biology major, is a son of Ms. Dita Mawhinney and Mr. Anthony Mawhinney and a graduate of Plum Senior High School.

Mara Sawdy, a senior environmental science major, is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William and Mary Sawdy and a graduate of Belle Vernon Area High School.

Adam Montowski, a junior history major, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick and Rebecca Montowski and a graduate of Dubois Area Senior High School.

Adam Cheatham, a sophomore environmental science major, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Sharon Cheatham and a graduate of Saint Peter Chanel High School.

Acacia Ferrese, a senior biology major, is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Craig and Kimberly Ferrese and a graduate of Shenango High School.

Lance Jubic, a senior biochemistry major, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory and Mary Jubic and a graduate of Kiski Area High School.
