¾¨Ó㴫ý has set several events to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Week.
¾¨Ó㴫ý's spring semester starts on Wednesday, Jan. 21, and birthday cake will be served from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the McKelvey Campus Center Orchard Street Café for all students and employees.
Worship service honoring Rev. King's birthday will be held at 4 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel featuring the Rev. Raymond Hylton, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of New Castle, as the keynote speaker. The Rev. Jim Mohr, ¾¨Ó㴫ý's chaplain, will begin the service with the call to worship, and Keturah Laney, chaplain assistant, will give the invocation. Scripture reading will be given my E. June Garner, registrar, and President R. Thomas Williamson will give the welcome address.
Dr. Elizabeth Ford, professor of English, will give an excerpt of one of Dr. King's speeches. Also participating in the celebration are: Joselyn Parker, a freshman exploratory major from Youngstown, Ohio; the Rev. Jeannette Hooks, director of diversity; and Seth McCormick, resident director. The ¾¨Ó㴫ý Gospel Choir will perform a music celebration during the service.
The celebration continues Friday, Jan. 23, at 11:40 a.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel with ¾¨Ó㴫ý Trustee Roberta Taylor speaking on "Living History." Following the chapel service, the audience is invited to bring their own brown bag lunches to the McKelvey Campus Center Club Room, and have further discussions on King.
