estminster College has recently received a $67,000 grant from the National Science Foundation under the "Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement" program.

"This grant funds a four-year project that will change how first and second-year chemistry courses are taught at ¾¨Ó㴫ý," said Dr. Timothy Sherwood, assistant professor of chemistry at ¾¨Ó㴫ý. "We are purchasing a High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), an instrument that separates compounds and detects their presence. Our students will be able to use this state-of-the-art equipment, which is an instrument of choice for separation and identification of pharmaceuticals and biomolecules."

As part of the conditions of the grant, ¾¨Ó㴫ý was required to match funds. This grant not only pays for the equipment, but also faculty training, a summer workshop, and development of new laboratory experiments."

Other faculty members involved in the grant proceedings include: Dr. Helen Boylan, assistant professor of chemistry; Dr. Martha Joseph, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry; and Dr. Peter Smith, assistant professor of chemistry.
