¾¨Ó㴫ý Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band & Jazz Ensemble to Give Spring Concerts

The ¾¨Ó㴫ý Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will give a spring concert Friday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium, and the Jazz Ensemble will give a concert Saturday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the McKelvey Student Center Lounge.

"The Wind and Symphonic Band concert is a unique blend of established and new music for winds and percussion including Eric Whitacre's "October" and established works including Alfred Reed's "Hounds of Spring" and Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Toccata Marziale," said Dr. R. Tad Greig, director of bands at ¾¨Ó㴫ý.  "We will also feature our Faculty Brass Quintet that includes Paul Gerlach and Andy Erb on trumpets, Rob Cole on horn, Robert Antonucci on tuba, and myself on trombone.

"The Wind Ensemble has just returned from an outstanding performance at the Pennsylvania Music Educators National Association State Convention, where they were a featured performance ensemble," Greig continued.  "This is a first for ¾¨Ó㴫ý and one of the very few times that ensembles from smaller colleges have ever had this performance honor."

Saturday's concert features the ¾¨Ó㴫ý Jazz Ensemble.

"The Jazz Ensemble will present a wonderful mix of styles that I am sure you will enjoy," Greig said.  "We will also unveil the ¾¨Ó㴫ý Faculty Jazz Trio that I am sure will be a hit.  The musicians are: Jeff Wachter on piano; Mark Antonich on guitar; and Jeff Bremer on bass."

Both concerts are free and open to the public.  For more information, contact Greig at (724) 946-7279 or e-mail greigrt@westminster.edu.

¾¨Ó㴫ý Broadcast Communications Major Lands "Weekend Today" Internship

Elizabeth Farry, a sophomore broadcast communications major at ¾¨Ó㴫ý, will spend the summer interning for NBC's "Weekend Today" show.

"I applied for many different internship at stations near my home, but I definitely wanted the Weekend Today' show because I love that show," Farry said.  "I was interviewed by a young guy probably, not much older than me.  He started out as an intern a few summers back and was lucky enough to stay on board."

Farry has a busy schedule at ¾¨Ó㴫ý.  She helps out behind the scenes with "Coache's Corner" and is an anchor/reporter for "The County Line" on the ¾¨Ó㴫ý Cable Network television station.  Farry also has a weekly radio shift and is the news director for Titan Radio.  When she's not broadcasting or in class, she is involved in Kappa Delta sorority, where she was elected secretary this year.

"My education from ¾¨Ó㴫ý is going to make all the difference at my internship this summer," Farry said.  "Because of the small size of our school, I've been lucky enough to have hands-on experience since my first semester here, so that puts me ahead of people coming from bigger schools where they don't get to touch the equipment until they are sophomores.

"Our broadcasting program is so amazing.  Professors Dr.[David] Barner and Mr. [Bradley] Weaver, and our engineer Chuck Chirozzi are so talented and willing to help with anything we need.  They emphasize the importance of deadlines and quality work, which are things that will be crucial at my internship.  Professionalism is also a big thing that they drill into us at ¾¨Ó㴫ý.  We're a real radio and television station, so they don't accept anything less than professionalism.  All of these things will help me this summer."

Farry, who is used to New York City because her family visits there often, is concerned only about transportation at such an early hour, so she's not sure if she will live at home or with her cousin in lower Manhattan.

"I know my parents will be concerned about getting myself around the city where I need to go all by myself," said Farry.  "But they are happy that I have this great opportunity, and know that nothing can stop me now!"

Farry is a daughter of James and Corliss Farry, Matawan, N.J., and a graduate of Matawan Regional High School.
