¾¨Ó㴫ý to Present Guest Pianist April 29

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - ¾¨Ó㴫ý will present guest pianist Holly Roadfeldt in Revolutionaries, Romantics, Rogues, and Rachmaninoff at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in Orr Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public.

¾¨Ó㴫ý Sorority Dunks Professors for Charity

The sisters of Phi Mu sorority offers a chance to get several ¾¨Ó㴫ý professors "all wet" in the dunk tank during Volleyrock Saturday, May 8, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. near the softball field side of Russell Hall.

All proceeds from the sale of the three for a dollar tickets will go to the Children's Miracle Network.

Professors and coaches available to dunk include: Dr. Joshua Corrette-Bennett, Tom Rosengarth, Dr. Timothy Sherwood, Dr. Ross Wastvedt, Dr. Kang-Yup Na, Dr. John Bonomo, Coach Robert Klamut, and Coach Scott Renninger.  In addition, each sorority and fraternity will have at least one representative to dunk.

Volleyrock is among one of the most popular events on ¾¨Ó㴫ý's campus and is sponsored by the ¾¨Ó㴫ý Student Government (SGA).

"This year we have 110 teams with over 800 students participating," said Russell Mills, a junior political science major from Pittsburgh and SGA Vice President.  "The day features the volleyball tournament, Quaker Steak and Lube wings, and a concert by national recording artist 'The Starting Line.'  In addition to Phi Mu's philanthropy event, Theta Chi and Sigma Kappa are co-sponsoring human bowling to raise money for Dwight Copper."

"Everyone on campus will be there," said Jolene Slattery, a sophomore broadcast communications major from Ridgway.  "If they are not playing, they will be watching."

¾¨Ó㴫ý's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Hosting Education Seminars

The ¾¨Ó㴫ý Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will host "Value Added Assessment: Theory into Practice" Wednesday, March 30, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Lakeview Room of the McKelvey Campus Center.

The Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was developed to advance world-class teaching at ¾¨Ó㴫ý and enrich K-12 education through outreach programs for area educators.

The workshop features Dr. Stanley Herman, Pennsylvania Value Added Assessment System (PVAAS) advisory committee consultant, and Sharon Kirk, DuBois Area School District Team.

This program, which includes lunch, will help participants become familiar with how the Value Added Assessment System will work in Pennsylvania to track an individual student's academic progress through the grades.  Herman will provide the latest on how this program will be implemented in all districts, while Kirk, who is from a pilot district, will discuss application in her district.

The event is sponsored by the Tri-State Area School Study Council Department of Administrative Policy Studies at the School of Education of the University of Pittsburgh in collaboration with the Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at ¾¨Ó㴫ý.

Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum dinner, offered April 7, is the final topic in this series.

College Organist to Give Christmas Recital

Dr. Elizabeth Harrison, assistant professor of music and college organist at ¾¨Ó㴫ý, will give an Advent and Christmas organ concert Monday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel.

 "My program includes: Dietrich Buxtehude's Magnificat Primi Toni; Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude and Fugue in C Major, BWV 545; Pastorale in F Major, BWV 590; Nun komm' der heiden Heiland, BWV 659; Wachet auf, ruf' uns die Stimme, BWV 645; Marcel Dupré's Improvisation on Adeste Fidelis; Alexandre Guilmant's Offertoire (No. 3) sur le Noël: Joseph est bien marié; Offertoire Noël Ècossais,  and others," Harrison said.  "It's going to be a really fun concert with some familiar tunes and great organ sounds."
 
 Harrison, who has been with ¾¨Ó㴫ý since 2000, earned her undergraduate degree from Duke University, her masters' from Southern College and New England Conservatory, and her D.M.A. from Stanford University.

¾¨Ó㴫ý Dance Theater to Give Spring Performance

The ¾¨Ó㴫ý Dance Theater will give its spring performance Thursday and Friday, March 27 and 28,  at 8 p.m. and Saturday, March  29, at 2 p.m.  All performances will be held in Orr Auditorium.

"There will be lyrical, tap, jazz, and hip hop numbers in the show," said Megan Ruefle, a senior biology major and performer from Pittsburgh.  "The program includes a variety of music like country, oldies, disco, hip hop, rhythm and blues, and Latin music."

Student Receives Grant to Present Research

Brett Turk, a junior psychology-human resources major at ¾¨Ó㴫ý, has received a Drinko Center grant to present his work at the Midwestern Psychological Association Annual Conference. Turk will present his work, "Understanding the Relationship Among Gender, Physical Attractiveness, and Sexual Orientation," in Chicago, May 3-6.
